What is Fostering?

Fostering is about providing a safe, supportive, and nurturing home for a child or young person who is unable to live with their parents. This can be for a variety of reasons, including family difficulties, safeguarding concerns, or experiences of abuse or neglect.

Every child’s situation is different. Some children may have additional emotional or behavioural needs, and fostering offers them the stability, care, and understanding they need to feel safe and supported while their circumstances are assessed or resolved.

What happens when a child enters care?

Once a child or young person enters care, their individual needs are carefully assessed to identify the most appropriate care arrangement. This important decision is made by experienced social care professionals, with fostering often identified as the most suitable and supportive environment.

National statistics highlight the vital role fostering plays. As of 31 March 2024, 83,630 children were in care, with 67% living with foster carers. Sunbeam Fostering Northwest is an independent fostering agency dedicated to recruiting, training, and supporting foster carers to meet these needs.

Fostering can be short term, such as, while a long term plan is being assessed or to provide respite care. In other cases, fostering may be long term, offering a child or young person stability and continuity for several years, often through to independence.

Becoming a foster carer involves a thorough assessment process, ongoing training, and a strong commitment to providing safe, consistent, and nurturing care tailored to each child or young person’s needs.
