Transferring with a child or young person

At Sunbeam Fostering Northwest, our focus is always on the best interests of every child and young person. Their happiness, wellbeing, outcomes, and support are our highest priority.

We warmly welcome foster carers who are considering transferring to us, including those who currently have children in placement. Below is a summary of the additional steps involved in the transfer process. You can also download our Transferring Guide using the button below.

Step 1

Notification Shared

Once you decide to transfer, you will need to provide formal notification to your current fostering provider and the Local Authority responsible for the child or young person. If you have more than one child placed from different Local Authorities, you will need to notify each relevant authority.

Step 2

Professionals Are Informed

The placing Local Authority will then update the Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO). This triggers a transfer protocol meeting, which must be arranged within 28 days. Attendees will include:

• The child’s social worker and/or Local Authority contracts officer

• A team member from Sunbeam Fostering Northwest

• A representative from your current fostering provider

Step 3

Transfer Protocol Meeting Held

This meeting will focus entirely on the best interests of the child or young person. Discussions will include:

• The most recent Care Review and the future Care Plan

• Any potential impact of the transfer—such as school transport, activities, and important relationships

• The child or young person’s specific needs and ensuring a comprehensive support plan, confirming the transfer is in their best interests

• Communication arrangements for ending your approval with your current fostering provider

• The agreed timetable and next steps for the transfer

Step 4

Practical Information and Arrangements

Sunbeam Fostering Northwest will work collaboratively with all parties to confirm approval dates, manage the 28 day notice period, and update all relevant documentation to support a smooth and timely transfer.
