Learn about the Fostering Process
Deciding to become a foster carer is a life-changing step, and understanding the path ahead is the first part of that journey. At Sunbeam Fostering Northwest, we believe that clarity breeds confidence. This guide is designed to walk you through the fostering process, from your very first enquiry to the moment you welcome a child into your home. Discover how our dedicated training and 24/7 support system empower you to transform a young person's future while growing your own skills as a specialist caregiver.

National statistics highlight the vital role fostering plays. As of 31 March 2025, 81,770 children were in care in England, and 54,820 of them (67%) were living with foster families. Fostering remains the most widely used form of care, offering children and young people a safe, secure, and child‑centred home environment.
While fostering can present challenges, it also leads to many powerful stories of love, resilience, and positive outcomes. These successes are made possible through the dedication and commitment of fostering families, often including their own children, working closely with social workers and other professionals.

The fostering process in the UK: What to expect
Becoming a foster carer is a thorough but rewarding journey. We work alongside you to ensure you are fully prepared, trained, and confident to welcome a child into your home.
How long does the process take?
On average, the fostering assessment takes between 4 to 6 months. This timeframe can vary based on your individual circumstances and how quickly background checks are returned, but we aim to make the journey as smooth as possible.
Your Roadmap to Approval
- Initial Visit: After your enquiry, we’ll meet with you to discuss the role and your suitability.
- Application & Background Checks: We undertake statutory checks, including a DBS and a standard fostering medical, to ensure a safe environment for children.
- Assessment & Training: Over several months, a dedicated social worker will visit you to complete your assessment report (Form F). You will also attend the ‘Skills to Foster’ training course.
- Fostering Panel: Once your report is complete, it is presented to an independent panel for a recommendation on your approval.
