Fostering Agency Transfers – Your Questions Answered

We understand that transferring fostering agencies may feel unfamiliar, so we’ve answered some common questions below. If you need further information, the team at Sunbeam Fostering Northwest is here to support you every step of the way.

If you have any further questions, or if you’d like more detailed information, please feel free to contact us or download our Transferring Guide using the button below.

Do I need another fostering assessment or a new assessment?

Yes. A new assessment is required because you are formally applying to join Sunbeam Fostering Northwest. However, the process is usually quicker than when you first became a foster carer.

If you can share your existing Form F assessment from your current agency, we will review it with you to determine whether it can be updated or whether a new assessment is needed. This will depend on your current approval terms and when your original Form F was completed.

You will be allocated a skilled, experienced assessor who will guide you throughout the process. All necessary checks and references will be completed again to make sure everything is up to date. As with your initial application, you will also be required to attend a fostering panel.

Can I transfer if I have a current placement and I am supported by another independent fostering agency?

Yes, you can transfer while you have a child or young person in placement. Their needs, stability, and ongoing support remain the highest priority throughout.

A transfer protocol meeting will be arranged between your current agency, Sunbeam Fostering Northwest, and the placing Local Authority. This meeting ensures that the transfer is in the best interests of the child or young person and that their care continues without disruption.

Will I receive training if I transfer to a new fostering agency?

Absolutely. You will receive full support and a comprehensive training programme when you join Sunbeam Fostering Northwest. This includes core courses such as Skills to Foster and ARC, as well as access to a wide range of specialist development opportunities.

Every foster carer receives a personalised training and development plan. We will review your previous training, your experience, and any areas you would like to develop further.

Your existing training history will be taken into account, and any gaps can be addressed through additional or enhanced courses. We are committed to supporting your continued growth so you feel confident and well-equipped in your role.

How long does the transfer process take?

On average, the transfer process takes three to six months from the date of your application. In many cases, it can be completed more quickly, especially if your application is fast-tracked by our recruitment team. Providing your existing Form F can also help speed up the process.

While we aim to make the transfer as smooth and efficient as possible, we maintain rigorous safer recruitment standards and do not compromise on quality, thoroughness, or safeguarding.

Can I transfer from a Local Authority to an Independent Fostering Agency (IFA)?

Yes. You can transfer from a Local Authority to an IFA. The process involves submitting an application and completing an assessment similar to when you first became a foster carer.

If you currently have a child placed with you, their welfare remains the priority. A transfer protocol meeting will be arranged to ensure a safe and well-planned transition that maintains placement stability.

How do I transfer to a new fostering agency?

Your transfer begins with an initial enquiry. A member of the Sunbeam Fostering Northwest recruitment team will arrange a home visit to discuss your interest in transferring and explain the process in more detail.

You will then complete an application form so that we can begin the required background checks and references. Your assessment will run alongside this.

If you currently have a child in placement, careful planning will take place to ensure continuity of care and promote the child or young person’s wellbeing. When the time is right, you will be supported in giving notice to your existing agency.

Sunbeam Fostering Northwest will guide and support you through every step to ensure a smooth and well managed transfer.
