Can I Foster?

Your first step in becoming a foster carer is understanding whether you can foster and whether it feels right for you.

At Sunbeam Fostering Northwest, we welcome foster carers from all backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. There are many myths about who can foster. You do not need to be married, own your home, or have children of your own to make a difference.

What matters most is your ability to provide a safe, caring, and supportive home for a child or young person. The core fostering requirements focus on your capacity to meet a child's needs, not your marital status, property ownership, or personal circumstances.

There are essential criteria you will need to meet, while other qualities and experiences are preferred and helpful. It’s also useful to understand what may disqualify someone from fostering in the UK, so you have a clear and complete picture of both eligibility and exclusions.
